Starting in 2025, major changes are coming to the HVAC world—and your air conditioner might be affected.
New, environmentally friendly refrigerants like R-454B and R-32 are replacing the widely used R-410A in all
new AC systems. This shift is part of an industry-wide effort to reduce the environmental impact of cooling
systems.
But what does that mean for your home?
R-410A has been the go-to refrigerant for years thanks to its efficiency—but it comes with a high global
warming potential. In response, the EPA mandated a gradual phase-out in favor of newer, climate-conscious
refrigerants. The HVAC industry has gone through similar transitions in the past, such as the move from R-22
(Freon) to R-410A.
These new refrigerants fall under the A2L classification—offering the same great cooling power with a much
lower global warming impact. For example, R-454B has nearly 80% lower GWP than R-410A.
Even better? New AC systems using R-454B and R-32 are designed to be more energy-efficient, helping you
save money on utility bills while keeping your home cool.
⚠️ Important: These new refrigerants are not compatible with older R-410A systems. That means
when you’re ready to replace your AC, you’ll need a system built for the new refrigerant type.
If your AC is more than 10 years old, this is a great time to start planning. While there’s no rush to replace a
